Our externship programme will run over a two-week period, where you will be involved in daily care of our in-patients alongside a hospital intern and our experienced nursing team. You will be expected to assist in all aspects of out of hours care, such as night checks and you will have the opportunity to observe out of hours surgery.
You will be expected to assist the interns with morning checks, which start at 7am. Checks will be completed by 8.15am, when hospital rounds commence. You will be expected to contribute to clinical discussions and ask relevant questions during rounds where appropriate. Externs are expected to remain at the hospital until all clinical duties are finished, and will ask permission from the in-patient intern to leave the hospital.
There will be the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in practical skills at the hospital, such as blood-sampling, intravenous catheterisation, nasogastric intubation. As well as this, you will observe lameness examinations and emergency evaluations of patients and their admission to the hospital. There will also be the opportunity to observe surgical procedures, both orthopaedic and soft tissue, with the potential to ‘scrub-in’. Diagnostic imaging, especially radiography, will also contribute to your experience here.
Own transport would be a huge advantage but not essential, and accommodation will be included. This will either be on-site or a five-minute drive from the hospital at the intern residence. There are supermarkets close by, please ensure you bring lunch with you daily. Tea and coffee are available for you at the hospital.
Externs should bring the following:
