Information for Clients regarding the prescribing regulations from January 2024
The RCVS have recently reviewed the guidelines around the prescribing of licenced veterinary medicines to animals.
The main change has been the inclusion of prescription flea and worm products in the same category as antibiotics. This has come about due to concerns arising from potential environmental contamination that may be impacting insect populations, specifically pollinators, and also aquatic life.
What this means for you.
Currently there are no plans to stop the preventative use of intestinal worming treatments or tick and flea preventatives, and we are still allowed to prescribe for up to 12 months treatment after a face-to-face clinical examination.
However, from 12th January 2024, we have to be extremely specific in what we prescribe – dose, active ingredient and formulation (tablets or spot on) and if anything changes e.g. a change in weight or a need to change the active ingredient or formulation of a product, a face to face clinical examination will be required. In order to comply with these new rules, we have to very specifically document what your pet is allowed to have, for how long and also document when the next routine examination is due.
Please bear with us while we transition to these new regulations as it may be that you are asked to come for a FOC flea and worm check with a vet to allow us to continue to prescribe these effective products that help keep pets healthy and prevent potential infections in their human companions.
Please feel free to contact the practice if you have any questions.
