Hird and Partners large animal practice consists of a team of nine veterinary surgeons, based at our main surgery in King Street and Shelf Equine Hospital, providing an ambulatory service to our equine and farm clients.
Our large animal division holds tier 2 of the RCVS accreditation scheme for farm and equine practice.
Continuing professional development (CPD) is compulsory for all our veterinary surgeons, ensuring they remain well informed about current developments in equine medicine and surgery.
All of our vets are members of BEVA (the British Equine Veterinary Association) and regularly attend meetings and courses run by the association.
We provide our own 24-hour emergency service to our clients, thus in an emergency situation clients can be reassured by a familiar face, and be offered the same high level of caring, compassionate service.
The large animal vets are supported by a team of helpful and friendly support staff, who can be contacted on 01422 354106.
The Shelf Equine Hospital also houses the practice’s MRI scanner. We are an RCVS Tier 2 accredited equine practice, so you can rest assured of our consistent level of care and
commitment to our patients. We have two well-equipped examination areas, stocks and an indoor and outdoor school for the evaluation of lame horses.
Our Services
Diagnostics & Treatment
Surgery is carried out by our team of experienced Veterinary Surgeons, assisted by our nursing team. We have two large, well-equipped operating suites, with a wide range of surgical instruments.
Lameness Investigations
Lameness investigations are carried out at our equine hospital; this is usually on a referral basis from either our own ambulatory veterinarians, or those at neighbouring practices. A lameness investigation includes a number of stages, and is individually tailored.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is used to visualise a horse's upper respiratory tract. This is carried out under standing sedation, with the endoscope introduced via the horse's nostril. Endoscopy is also a useful way to harvest diagnostic samples.
Anaesthesia
Our anaesthesia team is provided by a team of four veterinary surgeons, headed by consultant anaesthetist John Hird, we employ comprehensive monitoring equipment, modern drug combinations and comprehensive pre-anaesthetic examinations.
Gastroscopy
Our Equine hospital has a gastroscope to aid our understanding and diagnosis of diseases affecting the equine oesophagus and stomach.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is performed under standing sedation and allows us to image the inside of a horse's abdomen, in order to perform further investigation and treatment of certain conditions.
Pre-Purchase Examinations
Members of our dedicated team of Equine Veterinary Surgeons have attended further courses on pre-purchase examinations. We offer a choice of either two or five stage vettings.
Osteokine
Osteokine has been shown to accelerate healing in injuries involving fibrous tissues (tendons, ligaments, skin) and has also been used in bone healing.
Hospitalisation
Our hospitalisation facilities includes a total of 17 boxes, including three stables used for patients requiring intensive monitoring and fluid therapy.
Shockwave
Hird and Partners have been using Extracorporeal Shockwave Treatment (ESWT) for a number of years and can be carried out by our orthopaedic team and our ambulatory Veterinary Surgeons.
